CASE: University of Helsinki x Candour Identity
Industry:
Higher Education, Educational Services
Use Case:
Biometric self-service identification for international students via their smartphones – securely and quickly.
Initial Situation:
Covid19 highlighted the need for remote identification at University of Helsinki. The developed solution of manual video identification was a cumbersome and resource-intensive process. Video authentication required helpdesk staff to spend time creating the preliminary questions, agreeing on a time for authentication and authentication itself. Students also perceived video identification as inflexible and time-consuming.
“Cooperation with the University of Helsinki has been smooth right from the start. Understanding the University of Helsinki’s customer needs and responding to them through dialogue gave a great start to a long-term partnership.”
Harri Koskimäki, COO, Candour Identity

Solution:
Candour Face ID was implemented to streamline the identification process. The biometric solution enabled a secure and fast self-service process accessible to students at any time. This significantly reduced the need for video identification, improving both the student experience and staff efficiency.
Results:
• Speed and efficiency: The identification process was reduced from 15 minutes to 1-2 minutes.
• Resource savings: The workload of the helpdesk was reduced by 75 % during peak times.
• Improved customer experience: Students are happy to have easy and secure access to identification and credentials.
• Increased usage: Currently 90 % of foreign students are identified using Candour Face ID.
Customer Feedback:
“Candour Face ID has significantly simplified the identification process and reduced the workload of our helpdesk. We have received excellent feedback from both students and staff.”
Mari Nurmi, IT Manager, University of Helsinki
Future plans:
The successful cooperation will continue and during 2025, the University of Helsinki aims to integrate Candour Face ID as an integral part of the university systems. This will further streamline the user ID process and provide an even smoother user experience for the students.
